DT Intent
At Northfield Road Primary School, we believe every pupil deserves high-quality, hands-on learning in a safe and caring environment. Our broad and balanced Design and Technology curriculum follows the National Curriculum and promotes creativity, imagination and critical thinking through practical, project-based learning. Pupils design and make purposeful products that solve real problems, considering the needs and values of others. They explore meaningful contexts, take creative risks and develop as resourceful, innovative individuals. Learning about inspiring designers and engineers, helps pupils understand the history and impact of design, while fostering sustainable and forward-thinking approaches. Teaching is carefully sequenced to build knowledge in manageable steps, address misconceptions, and support long-term retention through regular retrieval practice. Vocabulary is explicitly taught, modelled, and revisited to strengthen understanding across all key stages.
Our curriculum is inclusive and accessible to all learners, with high expectations and tailored support for every child. Differentiation, scaffolding and adaptive technology ensure all pupils engage meaningfully with the subject.
Pupils are encouraged to take pride in their work, reflect on their learning, and communicate their ideas clearly. Their voices are valued through opportunities to evaluate and contribute to real-world design projects that celebrate creativity and diversity.
