Maths at Northfield Road 2023

Maths Intent

At Northfield Road Primary School, we develop fluent mathematicians who work logically, learn through mistakes, and embrace new concepts and challenges with a ‘can do’ resilient mindset. We equip pupils to be effective problem solvers who can explain their reasoning using mathematical vocabulary. We enable pupils to use mental methods and apply them appropriately. Exposure to daily high quality learning experiences develops their skills and confidence in a progressive way, inspiring children to be lifelong mathematicians.

Maths Overview

At NRPS we follow the White Rose Maths overview. Staff plan using the overviews and the National Curriculum objectives so that lessons are progressive. This enables all children to develop their mathematical knowledge and understanding. Staff use assessment strategies to ensure children “Keep up, not catch up” and to gather information on the children’s understanding, identify gaps in their knowledge and plan further lessons/interventions to enable them to further progress. Maths lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all learners, including opportunities for all children to work independently. Our teachers plan for all children to work on the same objective, but use of assessment strategies enable staff to adapt the journey for children to access the learning. Children are taught and encouraged to use a range of manipulatives to support learning/understanding.

Our lessons include these aspects of Mathematics:

  • Mental Mathematics Just Checking
  • Discovery Question
  • Input
  • Fluency
  • Application
  • Reasoning

The Mastering Number program is also taught to EYFS and KS1 children in addition to their Maths lessons, to develop their number fluency and understanding.
