Maths Intent

At Northfield Road Primary School, we believe that every child can succeed in mathematics. Our intent is to deliver a high-quality, mastery-based curriculum that fosters a deep, long-term, secure understanding of mathematical concepts. We aim to build confident, resilient learners who are fluent in the foundations, can reason mathematically, and apply their knowledge to solve a variety of problems.

Our approach is underpinned by the White Rose Maths scheme, which ensures a carefully sequenced curriculum that supports progression and coherence across all year groups. We place equal emphasis on fluency, reasoning, and problem solving, ensuring pupils develop not only accuracy and efficiency but also the ability to explain, justify, and apply their thinking in a range of contexts.

To secure strong foundations from the outset, we implement the Mastering Number programme across Key Stage 1 and into Key Stage 2. This supports children in developing a solid number sense, enabling them to confidently manipulate numbers, spot patterns, and make connections between different mathematical ideas.

Through small-step teaching, use of concrete, pictorial and abstract representations, and opportunities for mathematical discussion, we ensure that all pupils are supported and challenged to reach their full potential.

Ultimately, our goal is to ensure that pupils leave primary school as capable, curious, and enthusiastic mathematicians ready to build on their skills further and achieve, in the wider world.

Maths Overview

At NRPS we follow the White Rose Maths overview. Staff plan using the overviews and the National Curriculum objectives so that lessons are progressive. This enables all children to develop their mathematical knowledge and understanding. Staff use assessment strategies to ensure children “Keep up, not catch up” and to gather information on the children’s understanding, identify gaps in their knowledge and plan further lessons/interventions to enable them to further progress. Maths lessons are adapted to meet the needs of all learners, including opportunities for all children to work independently. Our teachers plan for all children to work on the same objective, but use of assessment strategies enable staff to adapt the journey for children to access the learning. Children are taught and encouraged to use a range of manipulatives to support learning/understanding.

The Mastering Number program is also taught to EYFS, KS1 and KS2 children in addition to their Maths lessons, to develop their number fluency and understanding.
