Science Intent

At Northfield Road Primary School, our science curriculum is designed to inspire pupils to become analytical, inquisitive and reflective thinkers. We aim to ignite a lifelong curiosity about the world around them and foster a deep, secure understanding of key scientific concepts. Our curriculum carefully develops both substantive knowledge (core facts and concepts) and disciplinary knowledge (the skills of working scientifically). Lessons are structured for clear progression, allowing pupils to revisit, build upon and deepen their understanding over time through regular retrieval practice that strengthens long-term memory and recall.

We place a strong emphasis on developing scientific vocabulary, enabling pupils to communicate their ideas with accuracy and confidence. Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive and accessible to all learners, ensuring every child is supported and challenged to achieve their full potential. Through a thoughtfully sequenced curriculum, pupils are encouraged to ask questions, explore ideas and make meaningful connections between their learning and the world around them. We nurture not only scientific understanding but also empathy and respect for living things and the environment, helping children recognise the relevance of science in their daily lives and in the wider world. Our science curriculum equips pupils with the knowledge, skills, and curiosity they need to thrive as confident, capable, and creative young scientists—both now and in the future.
